Another Benefit of the Fountain of Youth
March 31, 2010
Yesterday’s post was about the real Fountain of Youth. What is the real Fountain of Youth? Resistance training. Why is resistance training the Fountain of Youth. One of the reasons is this: almost everybody progressively gains fat after about age 20, and certainly after middle age. This is true of both the sedentary and active people. However, habitual resistance trainees buck this trend.
People that resistance train don’t gain as much fat as other people because they keep their muscle mass up. The additional muscle burns extra calories, which helps to keep fat off.
Another benefit of weight training is that it positively affects bone mass.
Osteoporosis affects many aging people; especially postmenopausal women. Osteoporosis causes a loss of bone mass as the skeleton loses minerals and becomes more porous. Bone mass can decrease as much as 50% in people above age 60.
Regular resistance training and weight-bearing exercise can slow and even reverse this process of bone loss. In fact, bone mass in elderly men and women has been shown to increase in response to resistance training.
So, for fat loss, muscle gain, six pack abs, and a strong skeleton, resistance train!
Just another way habitual use of the “Fountain of Youth” can help us out.

So true. I live in South Florida where so many older people relocate after retirement so many of them are frail and atrophied and it doesn’t have to be that way.

Hi Darryl,
Thanks for that reminder for bone density for women. I had heard something about that while back. However your explanation of the benefit for adult women to incorporate weight training into their workout and fitness regime made it very clear and understandable for me. Thanks, Darryl.
