Are You Committed?

July 10, 2009

Here’s an awesome quote that applies to any challenging and worthwhile endeavor — from making your first million bucks to losing 50 pounds of fat or gaining 10 pounds of lean muscle.

“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy; the chance to draw back; always ineffectiveness concerning all acts of initiative and creation.  There is one elemental truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one commits oneself, Providence moves all.  All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred.  A whole stream of events issue from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of incidents and meetings and material assistance which no one could have dreamed would come his or her way.” — Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

  1. What a great quote from Goethe, indeed. I think I always associate that quote with the Mt. Everest team.

  2. Hi Darryl,

I LOVE that quote from Goethe.

Indeed, the grievers who work with me through The Grief Recovery Institute’s process tell me the result was “priceless.” But the recovery from the emotional incompleteness when coping with the loss of a loved one does not come about until they take the first step, commit, and indeed DO the work and attend the seminar.

    Best regards,

    Good point made!

There’s a good read in Kevin Hogan’s current article “Developing Relentless Will Power” from his Coffee newsletter. Tht article will be off his website in 6 days to include in his new book.

  7. Great quote. There are so many from Gothe. It is that initial step that is so important but if we are not committed then it falls by the wayside.
