Spot Reduction and Toning
July 15, 2009
If you chat with a trainer that says you can spot reduce body fat in a particular area of your body, beware — something is awry! Spot reduction is not possible. When you lose fat, it kind of comes off in layers — like layers of an onion — from all over your body. Within each layer, there may be a predetermined order. Where it comes off first and fastest (...)
Free Weights and Machines
July 12, 2009
What is your preference when strength training — free weights or machine resistance? Here are some characteristics of both. Machines: 1. Machines allow you to isolate a muscle. 2. Machines control the movement of the weight, and therefore may be “safer”. 3. You generally don’t have to worry about getting trapped under a weight when using machines. 4. Because of numbers 2 and 3, above, a spotter is not (...)
Why Weight Training Rocks
July 11, 2009
Why is weight training so great for you? One of the biggest reasons people gain fat as they age is because they gradually lose muscle as they get older. Weight training preserves and/or increases your muscle mass, even into old age. This causes your body to maintain or increase the number of calories is burns throughout the day, every day. This maintenance or building of muscle and therefore metabolism (...)
Are You Committed?
July 10, 2009
Here’s an awesome quote that applies to any challenging and worthwhile endeavor — from making your first million bucks to losing 50 pounds of fat or gaining 10 pounds of lean muscle. “Until one is committed, there is hesitancy; the chance to draw back; always ineffectiveness concerning all acts of initiative and creation. There is one elemental truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one commits oneself, Providence moves all. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issue from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of incidents and meetings and material assistance which no one could have dreamed would come his or her way.” — Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe Darryl
15 Steps to Sexiness
July 9, 2009
Want to be a magnet? Consistently take these 15 actions and you’ll find yourself in the rarefied air of those with fantastic bodies: 1. Exchange whole wheat bread for white bread 2. Exchange long grain brown rice for white rice 3. Use low fat or no fat dairy products (e.g. milk, cheese, ice cream, etc.) 4. Remove skin from any chicken you eat 5. Forgo (...)
Success and Health
July 8, 2009
Yesterday I mentioned that I’m reading a book called, “How to Get Rich”, by Felix Dennis. Felix is from the UK. His writing style is blunt and no-nonsense. As JJ Jalopy (writer of a FANTASTIC blog) mentioned in his reply to yesterday’s post, Felix Dennis reminds him of another no-nonsense UK guy — Duane Cunningham (writer of another GREAT blog). I agree. Now that I (...)
Getting Fit and Staying Fit
July 7, 2009
Greetings folks. I just started reading a book called, “How to Get Rich”, by a dude named Felix Dennis. I think he’s from the UK. He is the founder of the magazine, Maxim. Anyway, in the preface, Felix presents the question, “Honestly speaking, what kind of people get to become rich?” His answer was this, “not those who want to and not those who need to, but those who are utterly determined to — whatever the cost.” Hey, this is awesome, because that answer could be given to this question as well, “Honestly speaking, what kind of people get to be fit and stay fit into old age?” Darryl

How Many Calories are You REALLY Eating?
July 2, 2009
Would you REALLY like to know how many calories you are taking in on a daily basis? The truth is that it is difficult to determine this by using “estimation” software programs or by entering the food you’re eating on a website. Probably the most accurate way this can be done at home is to use a food diary, food nutrition labels labels, and a website like http://www.nutrientfacts.com/ (...)
