Bogus Fat Loss
October 2, 2009
Here’s a bit of interesting information for the dieters out there. The general trend of weight loss for dieters is one where the weight lost during the first week of dieting is comprised of 70% water weight loss, 5% protein (muscle) loss, and 25% fat loss. Progressively, over time, the amount of weight loss that comes from actual fat loss increases so that by week 4, 85% of the weight lost comes from fat and 15% comes from protein. This points out the importance of measuring body fat percentage instead of just body weight, and the importance of sticking to a calorie deficit over an extended duration in order to achieve true fat loss. Measuring Body Fat
September 30, 2009
In a previous blog post, I mentioned that body weight is made up of a lot more than fat, and that when a person is engaged in a weight loss effort, that person should measure fat loss in addition to weight loss in order to get a clearer picture of what their body is doing. Health expert extraordinaire, Katie, asked this question: “how do you propose for someone to keep (...)
Still Working Out the Kinks
September 28, 2009
Folks, I apologize for this, but I’m still working on getting this new site into a fully functional status. Health expert, Katie, was kind enough to mention an issue with the comment boxes, and my focus is on getting that straightened out. While that issue is being worked on, the comment boxes themselves are unavailable. Hopefully all will be in working order within a day. We’ll see. In the meantime, be fit and healthy! Darryl
Family Activities
September 27, 2009
Today’s post will be lightening quick! Did you know that yesterday was the 13th annual Family Fitness Day? I didn’t; at least not until Dating Expert Extraordinaire, April Braswell, brought it to my attention. Of course, any day is a good day to enjoy fun activities with family and/or friends. Walking together, badminton, riding bikes, or games of tag with the kids (or adults) can be a blast, AND are great ways to get in a little physical activity. What kind of outdoor activities do you enjoy? Darryl
Starting a Body Transformation
September 26, 2009
Getting Started with a Body Transformation The most common fitness-related request I’ve gotten over the years from people in the office is: “Can you put a workout together for me?” That’s a general question, but it’s a good one — one that shows that the person asking is interested in becoming more fit and possibly enhancing or improving their health. A few good replies to that question are: “What’s your (...)
Still Working Out Some Wrinkles
September 25, 2009
All, thank you for your feedback on the new site. I’m still working out a few kinks, but will be back to fitness and health related blogging and articles shortly. Thanks again! Darryl
Just a Heads-Up
September 22, 2009
On Tuesday afternoon, darrylpace.com is going to undergo some renovations. In the process, the site may temporarily lose its RSS capability. However, hopefully this will be a smooth transition. Thank each of you for taking the time to read my posts up to this point. I’ll be posting again starting Wednesday morning. Darryl
Women, Don’t Worry; Men, Sorry
September 21, 2009
I’m an advocate of weight training along with cardiovascular training and a varied, healthful diet. When it comes to weight training, some women have been initially reluctant to participate in it because, they say, they don’t “want to get bulky”. Some men, on the other hand, want to become as big (muscle-wise) as possible. Well, ladies, don’t worry about becoming extremely bulky like a female bodybuilder; and men, I’m sorry, (...)
Fat Loss & Muscle Building Supplements
September 20, 2009
I have a question for you. It’s about supplements. In particular, it’s about the powders and bars that claim to cause fat loss or muscle gain. What do you think about those types of supplements? Did you know that the validity of the labeling claims and nutrient content of these types of supplements are not assessed by the FDA or other state or federal agencies? In other words, it is (...)
Simple and Effective Weight Management Tool
September 19, 2009
In the last post, I listed the website, “fitday.com” as a good site for tracking daily calories. In response to that post, Rob Northrup said the following: “I carry a small memo pad with me and I write down everything before I eat it.” My response to Rob’s comment is: “That’s awesome!” Here’s why I think a food journal is a very good idea. Blank Food & Exercise Journal A (...)
