Essential Nutrients
Would you like to have great health? If so, make sure you are getting all of your “essential” nutrients. Essential nutrients are some that your body needs for health, but that it cannot manufacture on its own. In order for your body to get these nutrients, you MUST consume them in the food you eat. If you do not get them via your food and/or supplements, you will NOT have optimal health…period.
The essential fatty acids were covered in a previous post. Today, let’s talk briefly about essential amino acids. There are 8 of them. You can get them by eating “complete” sources of protein like eggs, milk, meat, fish, and poultry. Eggs contain the most optimal mixture of amino acids among all food sources. Vegetable sources of protein are “incomplete” in that they are missing one or more of the essential amino acids. However, it is possible to get all of the essential amino acids from plants by eating a variety of grains, fruits, and vegetables.
For great health and lots of energy, eat a varied diet that, among other things (nuts, dairy, beans), includes grains, fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and fish. Americans typically don’t get enough fruits and vegetables. Work toward giving yourself several servings of each of these every day.
