Why Weight Training Rocks
July 11, 2009
Why is weight training so great for you?
- One of the biggest reasons people gain fat as they age is because they gradually lose muscle as they get older. Weight training preserves and/or increases your muscle mass, even into old age. This causes your body to maintain or increase the number of calories is burns throughout the day, every day. This maintenance or building of muscle and therefore metabolism makes it easier to lose fat and maintain a lean body.
- Weight training makes you look better. It does so by building your muscles. When your muscles become more developed, they affect the shape of your body, giving you a “toned” look. This is pleasing to people that look at you, and it’s pleasing to you when you look in the mirror.
- Weight lifting not only makes your muscles stronger, but also your tendons (they connect muscle to bone) and ligaments (they connect bone to bone). This makes it more likely that you’ll catch yourself if you stumble or lose your balance, rather than get injured.
- Weight lifting helps strengthen bones and prevent osteoporosis.
- Strength training can lower your blood pressure, reduce risk for diabetes, and help increase your “good” cholesterol (HDL) level while helping to decrease your “bad” cholesterol (LDL) level.

I should pump more iron. I do in the winter but not so much this time of year with all the biking, running and swimming out of doors!

You know? I was just looking at myself in the mirror while working out on the elliptical trainer this afternoon. I was thinking how I need to add some weight training soon because of precisely what you said. that we tend to lose muscle mass with age.
So we need to make more of a concerted effort to maintain and build our muscle mass as we age.
Take care,
April Braswell
